Benijofar is located close to Rojales and has one of the smallest municipal districts of the region. It is about 10/15 mins inland from the coastal town of Guardamar with its blue flag sandy beaches and protected pine forest/nature reserve. Its Arabic name ‘Yauhar’ means the son of a pearl and refers to either the Arabic name or to a topographical feature shaped like a pearl. Its fate has always been linked to the Segura River which has been the source of both fortune and misfortune – the 1957 floods destroyed the village and killed some of its inhabitants. Today the river is channelled and controlled and constitutes a rich economic source for Benijofar. Farming is its main economic activity especially fruit and vegetables which are sent every day to be sold in the towns and villages of the Alicante Province. Indeed you can visit a street market every day in the area with Benijofar holding its own on a Tuesday. A quaint village with a recently renovated town square, the roads and streets are wide and clean and a pleasure to walk along taking in the various shops, bars and restaurants. The area enjoys excellent access.
