Málaga Airport (IATA: AGP, ICAO: LEMG) is the main airport for the Costa del Sol of Spain. It is 8 km southwest of Málaga and 5km north of Torremolinos. The airport has flight connections to over 60 countries worldwide, and 13,590,537 passengers passed through it in 2007. The airport currently operates with two terminals. A third terminal adjacent to the previous two is currently under construction and is scheduled to open in 2009. A second runway is expected to open by 2010
Passenger numbers have increased consistently from levels of around 6 million in 1995 to 13,590,537 passengers in 2007.
The busiest routes are those within the EU, particularly to and from the United Kingdom and Ireland.
Malaga airport is well-served by public transport, with Cercanías Málaga train directly serving the airport from Malaga city centre and Fuengirola, an airport coach linking to Marbella bus station. The number 19 bus run by EMTSAM runs a service to Malaga Bus Station and the City Centre and costs 1 Euro. The bus runs from 6am - 12 midnight and departs from the arrivals section in both terminals 1 and 2.
Future roadmap
In order to meet the present and future demand Aena has foreseen a set of performances concerning infrastructures at a short and medium term to keep on the level of service quality at the airport, which currently has the Operational Quality Certification ISO 9,001 and Environmental Quality ISO 14,001.
The short-term development program started two years ago with the construction and operation of a new control tower which is being completed with the expansion of the apron (with capacity for nine medium-size aircraft), the construction of a logistic area to handle airport services (both commercial and aeronautical with more than 60,000 square meters developed), a new building for ground handling companies, and the design and construction of a new terminal area for passengers
This terminal is made up of a passenger building which will bring the airport capacity to 9,000 passengers per hour. The new 250,000 square meter building will be complemented with car/bus park buildings, new accesses and the incorporation of the railway service. Likewise the new terminal will have twelve new boarding gates with air bridges, one of then designed to handle the future Airbus A-380. The new terminal will have more than 60 check-in counters that with those already existing will add more than 120 units. There will be twenty four gates with direct connection to the aircraft, and more than twenty baggage belts.
It is also planned at a short term the construction of a new terminal for corporate aviation and its ramp, a new centre for security and services, and the upgrading of the electric power, water and drainage services among others.
In the medium term, the Airport of Malaga plans to increase the capacity of the maneuvering area with the upgrade of the holding bays associated to runway 14/32 and the construction of two new high speed taxiways.
However the main performance foreseen for the next decade is the construction and operation of a new maneuvering area located at the northwest side of the current one and that will have a second runway and its taxiways associated.
With this plan the Airport of Malaga will be able to handle more than 70 operations/hour and 12,000 passengers /hour, after putting in operation the second phase of the terminal area now designed.
